Coffee & bikes

Bikes & Coffee

Why are they so good together?

we could go back to the 1960’s and talk about Fabbrica Apparecchiature Elettromeccaniche e Affini and eddy Merckx -And who doesn’t want to talk about eddie Merckx? But we’re talking about bikes and coffee here, not one of the greatest cyclists of all time. Cafés and espresso bars can be a quick stop on a long ride, or they can be simply a place for good friends to meet up. Maybe the coffee shop is A place to straighten your back, stretch your legs and grab something hot, or something cold -or one of each if you’re feeling feisty.

we envisioned our particular coffee shop as a place to support cyclists on their weekend rides, And as a place for our local community (or visitors) to gather, whether you like bikes or not. But if you happen to like bikes, and you happen to ride, we were thinking of you. We have the coffee things, the tasty snacks, the bike bits, the advil and the sunscreen. If anything goes wrong, we want you to get home in one piece -because we’ve been there.

We love marshall and we are so excited to be part of this thriving downtown. though we are new to main street, Adam has been a Marshall resident for 10 years, and Alex and Madeleine have been in the area since we left New Orleans after Katrina. Adam and I had our second date at sweet monkey, our rehearsal dinner at Zadie’s and the old jail, and many special occasion dinners at the star DIner. There’s yoga on the island, we’re friends of the library, and we get through the dmv in record time thanks to Julie AND LAURA. We may have an addiction to the pignoli cookies from ivy and the poet and we think Susan the welding teacher at AB tech is the bomb. We are proud to be members of this community and we love riding the twisty roads and looking at these beautiful blue green mountains. We hope you’ll love our little shop as much as we do.

We are working with My Sister’s place a non-profit agency working in Madison County that seeks to end domestic violence and sexual assualt by providing the children in their shelter new bike helmets. Thanks to the generosity of a local church, all the kids receive new bikes for christmas. We would like to amplify this gift by adding helmets — because We think the only thing better than a kid on a bike, is a kid on a bike with a safe noggin.

ways to help: Drop a new kids bike helmet by the shop. however gently used, however well meant, we cannot accept used helmets. We will be buying an array of new children’s helmets from our suppliers before christmas and we will happily accept donations to this fund to increase the number of helmets we can purchase.

birthday fairy bike project

Another ongoing project with My Sister’s place is a year round drive to fix up kid’s bikes for children living in the shelter over their birthdays. Many of these children arrive at the shelter with nothing. Many have never had a birthday party. Our goal is to fix up a small armada of rejuvenated bikes to suit each kid on their birthday.

ways to help: Drop your previously loved children’s bikes by the shop. These bikes will go directly to children in their programs after going through our rehabilitation process. We will make sure the bikes are tuned up, safe and ready to go. My Sister’s Place will make sure these bikes arrive in time for each kid’s special day. Your garage is a little cleaner and you get a receipt for the tax man. Win/win? we think so.

Proud to support our local cycling community

adam has been an avid cyclisT his entire life (and I’m so sad that I’m not allowed to post pictures, because aero helmets are, let’s face it - really funny) we both ran distance, WE BOTH RIDE. Bikes aren’t just decorations for us. It’s not a cute theme for the cafe. We’re happy to fill your water bottles, our restrooms are open. we know how $%#*ing hard you’re working out there. It’s real to us.

We opened in June.

We became business members of the Blue Ridge Bicycle club about two weeks later.

We were sponsors of the 17th annual Hot Doggett and july 8th we were out at Mars Hill university fixing up bikes at the start line.

a week later - We were also sponsors of the Asheville gran fondo and spent saturday july 15th at bike fest and sunday july 16th of the fondo outside our cafe in marshall ringing a cowbell and cheering like loons for all the riders passing our small establishment. And we stayed out there, cheering, until the last rider passed. We were very proud to sponsor local cyclist Eric White in the race.

not too bad for our first two months open.
